Home to the 1st Infantry Division, known as the “Big Red One,” Fort Riley is a major center for infantry training and readiness. Fort Riley continues to be a vital hub for military operations, providing training, support, and a home for soldiers and their families.

  5. Expensive Compared to Neighboring Cities

Manhattan, KS

The majority of Servicemembers stationed at Fort Riley live in Manhattan: the 9th largest city in Kanasas (54,287). Manhattan is home to the Kansas State University and is very much a college town. The downtown area is lined with local shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, providing activities in an otherwise isolated location.

Topeka, KS

Topeka is the only option for Servicemembers who enjoy nightlife, city-living, and more activities, however, living here comes with a little over an hour commute. While there may be more to do in Topeka, the city’s crime rates are double the national average, and school districts are worse than other neighboring cities.

Junction City, KS

Servicemembers who desire a short commute choose to live in Junction City. Junction City is adjacent to Fort Riley and is the 20th largest city in Kansas (22,738). Junction City offers a blend of small-town charm, military influence, and a variety of local attractions, but crime rates are slightly higher here than Manhattan, KS.
